Back to the Future

After citing Balenciaga and Yves Saint Laurent as influences, this collection stood to be architectural and innovative or a foot in mouth disappointment. MUSE’s Christian Chenail managed to deliver with structured pieces and bold colour combinations that are both contemporary and reminiscent of legendary designers past.

Exhibit A: the metallic grey bolero with shoulder emphasis and bunched sleeves that, while obviously Spanish inspired, draws on the space age vibe so prevalent during the 60s when both couturiers were widely celebrated.

Similarly, the blue zip front trapeze dress invokes the spirit of classic looks from either cited designer. Rounding out the collection with striped wide leg trousers, a modern graphic print skirt suit and a variety of obi belts, Christian Chenail proved that it is possible to draw from the archives without sacrificing originality.
