She’s a person that really shows off that hard work, determination and a positive attitude make way for success. I met Heather Mocharski in her shop while I was frantically looking for a pair of booties to complete an outfit for an interview I had that week. I had strolled into many of shops in the hopes to find that perfect match, and low and behold, there they were! Beige suede, lace-up the back booties in my size! Honestly, it felt as though I had awoken from the fashion dead as I thought to myself; why didn’t I think of vintage in the first place. “ You see, this was meant to be” Heather said with this cheerful satisfied tone. Her charming persona offered instant comfort and there you have it I became fan!
Heather is the “lucky” owner of vintage boutique “Lucky Rooster” just off Commercial Drive on Charles Street in Vancouver’s Eastside. It’s an adorable vintage haven filled to the brim with an eclectic mix of vintage frocks, shoes, hats, hand dyed fabrics, local jewellery furniture, glasswear and pretty much anything with charm. It’s one of those shops that you suddenly think, do I keep this a secret or do I tell everyone I know. Her exquisite taste for vintage pieces comes from a love for giving new life to old objects. “Vintage things, if you really love them, come to you. Vintage stuff talks to you” she explains. I have to agree cause those shoes were defiantly saying my name.
Despite her humble beginnings growing up on the eastside, she has persevered through tough times and remained loyal to the neighborhood she still calls home. “ It’s ironic because I grew up wearing second hand clothes that I resented, and it has ended up becoming my life” After getting a degree from UBC she spent twelve years working in the corporate world before she decided to take a leap of faith and go after a dream. “ I started this business without any formal training and basically had help from the kindness of strangers to build this shop into a space that I love”. Celebrating six years this month she is loving life and you’ll know it as soon as you walk in her store.
