A very Black Swan collection.
The post Pink Tartan first appeared on GLOSS: The Fashion Magazine .
Kimberley Newport-Mimran, the mind behind the coveted Pink Tartan label drew inspiration from 70’s supermodel Marisa Berenson for the Fall/Winter 2011 collection, calling it “couturitarian”.
But with ballerina-like models in such contrasting outfits, it is hard not to equate the collection to the Black Swan . The beautiful below-the-knee tulle skirt and white ostrich feather skirt contrasted in a good versus evil kind of way with the all-black form fitted suit and military-inspired black coat with high turtle neckline and gold buttons.
Either way, the collection is, quite simply, fabulous.

Seventies style and global expansion: a look at fall 2011.
The post Joe Fresh Style first appeared on GLOSS: The Fashion Magazine .
Fashion tycoon Joseph Mimran’s design crew did it again. Blasting back to the seventies with turtlenecks, colour blocking, wide leg trousers, and an overwhelming selection of mini skirts, it’s almost hard to believe that this is the cheap and cheerful wonder mixed between housewares and bulk food.
Striking combinations of kelly green, cobalt blue, honey mustard, and the namesake Joe orange came down the runway in brilliantly styled combinations of knee length dresses, neoprene overcoats, minis, and classic shirts styled with gold, gold, and more gold. Even the fashion elite will be looking for those laceless gold oxfords!
Highly adorned with beads, fringes, feathers, and appliques, these mini skirts were impressive. Certainly not what you would expect from a simple budget label like Joe Fresh, giving pause over how much they will really cost come fall 2011. Surely, not $29.99?!
Those with a keen eye will be jumping on the items that aesthetically speaking looked like they belong on a Jil Sanders runway. We’re pretty sure that nothing actually fell off of a turnip truck and accidentally landed on the Joe Fresh catwalk, but you never know.
Interestingly enough, what was talked about even more than the collection were the New York writers brought in to sit in the front row, including well-known fashion writer and New York Times best-selling author, Derek Blasberg. If that doesn’t say US expansion, I don’t know what does. Rumor has it Joe Fresh Style will be opening a stand-alone store on Fifth Avenue this fall.

Fall/Winter 2011 cottage collection.
The post Hustle with Bustle first appeared on GLOSS: The Fashion Magazine .
Bustle designers Shawn Hewson and Ruth Promislow’s latest collection epitomizes the rich kids’ winter trip up to the cabin for a chill week of sufficiently cold activities like dog sledding and snowshoeing.
And what does the squire wear when entering the foreign territory of winter cottage life? Apparently, a dreamy collection of lounge pants, sweaters, well-fitted trousers, layered tees and cotton flannel underneath sartorial jackets in classic check and stripe prints. What more can we say? We approve.

Where hippie grunge meets the psychedelic 70’s.
The post Juma’s Kaleidoscope first appeared on GLOSS: The Fashion Magazine .
Brightly coloured sphere and rhombus shapes exploded onto the runway of LG Fashion Week as sibling design duo Alia and Jamil Juma presented their Fall/Winter 2011 Kaleidoscope collection.
Parading a plethora of prints, the collection included breezy tunics, pleated pants, tailored jackets, full-piece jumpers, and, most noticeably, a body-hugging dress affixed with a cloak-like hood in an undeniably acid tripping print.
With mainstay blacks and androgynous underpinnings, the most succinct way to describe the collection is hippie grunge colliding into the psychedelic 70’s. Overall, it was another successful collection for the Canadian designers who are slowly but surely taking the fashion world by storm.

Feminine, earthy, and romantic! Vancouver fashion designer Angela Chen studied at the Parsons School of Design in New York before launching her collection, Orange by Angela Chen, in 2007. Just off the LG Fashion Week runway, the Spring 2011 collection is the most defined one yet.
Inspired by the romantic movie, The Blue Lagoon, the shades of light blue, dove grey, white, and black flowing dresses are perfect for a warm breeze on a Tahitian beach (or just about anywhere).

It’s not a question of lust or love. We can’t say love any louder! Neon yellow, pink, and blue spun into jumpers and loose silhouettes reminiscent of seventies disco. Bravo Kim Newport-Mimran! Pink Tartan’s spring collection is bright, fresh, and well worth a wear.

Spotted on celebrities like Tori Spelling, Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Garner, the label Line is making a name for itself. John Muscat and Jennifer Wells, the creative forces behind the Parisian brand, recently showed off their Spring 2011 collection at Toronto’s LG Fashion Week.
I loved the barely there tops mixed with the neutral palette and some of the pretty draping and dresses but wasn’t fond of the actual knits. It reminded me of something my grandma might have knit up. Not exactly my cup of tea.
