My Winnipeg

My Winnipeg is Guy Maddin’s (The Saddest Music in the World) docu-fantasia. Maddin dives back to his hometown to relive his childhood and do things differently. The film blends local and personal history with Maddin’s heightened childhood perception and metaphorical myths. A winner at the Toronto International Film Fest for Best Canadian Film, check out My Winnipeg, in theatres June 13.

Step Brothers

If you’re looking for a no-hold-back comedy, a la The Wedding Crashers, Anchorman, and 40 Year Old Virgin, then Step Brothers, starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, is sure to fit the bill. The film is about two adult men who become step brothers when their parents marry. Enemies at first before becoming the ultimate step-brother duo, Step Brothers is sure to have you keeling over with laughter when it hits theatres July 25.

American Teen

Nanette Burstein’s documentary is set in a high school in small town Indiana and follows a group of teenagers falling under stereotypes (rebel, jock, popular girl, geek, etc.) around during their senior year. Hailed as a “modern day Breakfast Club” with an official selection at Sundance, American Teen will take you back to high school without having to personally relive the hell when it hits theatres July 25.

Mamma Mia!

With the success of bringing Broadway musicals to the big screen (Dreamgirls and Hairspray), Mamma Mia!, the hit ABBA-based musical seen by over 30 million people across the world, will hit theatres July 18. Meryl Streep leads an all-star cast including Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Amanda Seyfried. Set in Greece, Mamma Mia! tells the tale of a mother about to let her only daughter go, and romances that can be rekindled to bloom.

Quid Pro Quo

Quid Pro Quo takes viewers down a twisted, haunting tale filled with deceit, seduction, and bribery. Nick Stahl plays Isaac Knot, a wheelchair-stricken radio reporter. When he receives an anonymous tip, Isaac is swept into a world where people share the perverse desire to be disabled. Quid Pro Quo is a modern detective thriller that will leave viewers chilled when it hits theatres June 13.

The Wackness

Yes, this is the film where Mary-Kate Olsen shared a kiss with Sir Ben Kingsley. The Wackness is set in the summer of 1994 on the streets on New York, where citizens are rebelling against the strict rules that new mayor Rudy Giuliani has implemented. Luke Shapiro (played by Josh Peck) spends his last summer before college trading dope for therapy with his shrink (Kingsley) while crushing on his step-daughter played by Olivia Thirlby (Juno). Set against a soundtrack of old school hip-hop, check out The Wackness in theatres July 3.
