PRETTY PYRRHa
Graham Gartside
Two designers with a keen eye for originality are rebelling against fashion’s tendency to mass-produce shoddy, insipid accessories, reinstating the appeal of quality craftsmanship.
Danielle Wilmore and Wade Papin present avant-garde ideas that satisfy the modern fashionista’s thirst for quality tailoring and old-world craftsmanship while providing emerging artisans with license to be more unorthodox and daring with their designs. From their studio in Vancouver, these self-taught designers, with their loyal atelier of staff have tapped into people’s need for jewellery that is authentic and original. They have become fashion rebels, defying the gaudy, inferior designs commonly found cluttering today’s market. While today’s so-called “trendy” jewellery reeks of tackiness, Pyrrha carries with it a dreamlike quality, a hint of romantic whimsy with a streak of classic cool.
By playing with antiquated symbolism and experimenting with motifs, Pyrrha has conceptualized their signature pieces: sterling silver, bronze and 14k gold pendants and rings inspired by 19th century European wax seals. Each piece looks like it might have been uncovered by an archeologist with its authentic cracked edges and antique finish. Both delicate and strong, each seal is infused with rich symbolism, reaching beyond the realm of ornamental and bringing to the wearer a sense of something more spiritual and emotional.
Pyrrha’s designs appeal to both men and women and have been seen dangling from the necks of stylish celebrities like Chloë Sevigny and Brad Pitt. Destined to become timeless pieces that will transcend the fickle fashion industry’s need for what’s next and new, Pyrrha’s designs are a simple statement of eloquent beauty that is missing in our throwaway world.
