There’s no business like it

Saskatchewan-based Clara Edvi is living the dream. As the makeup artist on the new Canadian series Sisu, she transforms actors every day and gets to see it all come alive on screen. Clara shares with us what it’s like being behind the camera.

GLOSS: How did you get started?
CE: I have always been very passionate about makeup; every aspect of it interested me, but I was always told that I could never make a real career of it. I finally stopped listening to what everyone was saying and decided to pack up and move to Vancouver to take the Makeup Artistry course at Blanche MacDonald. I have never looked back since.

GLOSS: Best experience on set?
CE: There have been so many; I feel so blessed to have worked with so many amazing and talented people. Every time I walk out on a set and see the actors transformed into their character through my makeup, it is the greatest experience.

GLOSS: What has been the biggest challenge in your career?
CE: The biggest challenge for me was actually moving back to Saskatchewan because I didn’t think there would be any work here for me.  But the film industry is really picking up out here, and there is a lot of hidden talent in the prairies.

GLOSS: Advice for anyone wanting to work in the film industry?
CE: First impressions are everything - most of the jobs I have gotten were through people I have worked with on past shoots or other jobs. Networking is very important in this industry. Always be prepared - anything can happen on set.  There is nothing worse the being ill prepared, and it could cost you future jobs.

GLOSS: Describe a typical day on set.
CE: A typical day on set is a very early start time and usually a very late end time. I am constantly prepping and touching up my actors throughout the day and making sure they are always ready.

GLOSS: Who inspires you and why?
CE: Lee Graff, co-founder of the Cover FX line, is at the top of my list. This line is amazing and has changed so many lives. She taught patients living with rosacea, acne, scars, and other skin discolorations how to effectively cover their flaws with her special technique and makeup.

GLOSS: Favorite makeup tip?
CE: Never let your kit run out of Clarins Instant Light Perfecting Touch. I can’t live without it. It’s a highlighting pen I use under the eyes and all the way up to the lids and brow bone.  It gives you that wide-awake look - even when your not! Also it’s a great primer for your eye makeup; your shadow will last you all day.
