Metamorphosis

Metamorphosis was a great concept for the Art Institute of Vancouver’s fashion show. Too bad the students didn’t design with it in mind.

The montage of sperm and oil covered birds that opened the show had parents, who were there to view the 38 collections, grumbling. With good choreography each student got his or her fair share of stage time. They presented diverse styles including bridal wear, dance wear, and ethnic fashions.

Designers Aeron Avinou, Dahye Lee, Faye Caudwell, Nicole Simoes, Taron Layne, Trisha Rampersad, and Yolaine Cabana created standout pieces, and Annie Wong designed a plaid evening gown that left viewrs wondering how they could get their hands on one of their own. Cindy Martinez’s collection, which included washer silk fashions of muted elegance, was the highlight of the evening.

By the second hour, I had hit my threshold for student design. But on the bright side, there is no limit to the talent coming out of the Art Institute.

Metamorphosis was organized by BC Fashion Week and the Art Institute of Vancouver.
