Le St-Sulpice

If you’d like to get a taste of a pure French-Quebecois environment, Le St-Sulpice bar on St-Denis Street is the uncontested champion. This greystone building looks like an average two-floor bar, but take one step outside in the back, and you’ll be amazed by the impressively large, open terrasse.

On a busy Saturday night, a group of eight people are squeezed around two tiny tables, with barely any room to walk in between. Conversations buzz in French slang, while pitchers of beer and sangria are downed left and right. If there’s any kind of music playing, it’s drowned out by the boisterous noise of happy campers. The grubs aren’t worth paying for, as they take too long to get to you; but service will be quick on the alcohol — no doubt about that.

So put away the pretty, the sophisticated, and the demure for another day, parce qu’ici on s’en calisse! (Because here, we don’t give a damn!)
