While Joe Corre’s and Serena Rees’s names may not be as well-known as their design counterparts, their Agent Provocateur label sure is. The founders of the racy lingerie label were made Members of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen’s birthday honours in mid-June, raising eyebrows in the British media and fashion community. Even more shocking, however, was Corre’s announcement that his political convictions – namely, that Tony Blair’s Labour Party was “dishonest” for taking Britain to war in Iraq and Afghanistan – had prompted him to change his mind and reject the award. While Corre may be anti-Blair, his hostility doesn’t extend to the Queen. In addition, his partner, Rees, has accepted the recognition, and the two will continue to work together on the brand.
Another designer duo, Dean and Dan Caten of Dsquared, also made news recently when it was announced that they had signed an eyewear license with a major Italian company. According to WWD.com, Dean Caten said, “Dsquared wants to cut the glare.” Further details regarding which company will be producing Dsquared eyewear has not yet been revealed.
Similarly, John Galliano, head designer for Christian Dior, took the plunge and marketed his first-ever swimwear collection under his own name. The license was established with Italian manufacturer Albisetti, and the collection was shown in Paris from July 1 to 3. Retail prices are expected to start at approximately $180 US.
